Friends to Strangers

I can’t sleep. I feel asleep for about 2 minutes but I woke myself up because I was watching Garden State. And now that I wanted to sleep I can’t.

Not that it kept me awake but I was thinking about a friend. We were close back then but upon entering med school she became aloof. I used to tell her stuff that only a handful of people know and she shared some personal things too. She’s like an older sister to me.

The last good memory I had with her was when she and another friend invited me for lunch. They just had their graduation photos taken and they called me up and asked if I was free. We ate at Burger King. I don’t eat more than I normally would with them. I don’t know why. Then I remember that she said something about my cellphone being new and colored.

I guess the whole point of this post is that people change. I just have to deal with the fact that we’re practically strangers now. It’s just sad thinking about the memories we had. They’re not really great or anything. What I’m trying to say is that, I miss my friend.

iPod Shuffle Dream

I dreamed that I had an iPod Shuffle hanging in my neck. It had a few scratches but I enjoyed it as if it’s new.

In real life, I wouldn’t consider buying a shuffle. I’d rather have an iPop mini instead. But then again if I had the money I’d rather buy a nice digicam. I’m eyeing on the Canon PowerShot A95 eventhough I don’t have enough money to buy one.

100 Photographs that Changed the World

I was dumbfounded by Life’s 100 Photographs that Changed the World.

It portrayed dehumanization that I thought I would only see in a Kubrick movie. Two black men hanged while the mob smiles at the camera. A Viet Cong in agony while he waits for his executioner to pull the trigger.

Opression, depression, war, child labor, life. Sometimes words are just not enough.

From the Reunion

Decided not to go
I just came home and the reunion was great. After eating at Dencio’s they asked if we wanted to go out for some drinks. We said yes but Barlis and I decided not to go along with some other classmates. Actually I decided not to go because (1)I really have to save money and (2)I don’t feel like it.

Bad luck
Bad luck happened on the way home. Barlis uknowingly drove to a one-way street and the traffic enforcers fined him P2,000.00. A classmate followed us and was also fined. I felt bad for him.

Responsibility
Barlis was regretting. He said that we should’ve gone drinking. I told him that it’s not bad luck and it was our decision so we must stand up to it. We’re responsible for all our actions. Luck has nothing to do with it.

Business talk
On the good side, I found out that Barlis was just as eager to start a business. I told him that I’m serious and willing to start any kind of business (legal of course) big or small. We were on the same page about starting ASAP and going for a small time business first.

A wacky suggestion
Michelle had this outrageous suggestion (but I think she was serious at first) about starting a bar. A “Siomai Comedy Bar” she said. Barlis will provide the somai and I will be the standup comedian. That suggestion came from my patented delivery of uberly corny jokes ™ over dinner. I was supported by my two other friends and the “Porkchop Trio” was born. I would be “Porky”, Nheo will be “Choppy” and Paje’s self-suggested monicker was “T-bone”; Dorky yet hip-hoppy.

Gradeschool Reunion

I’m going to a mini gradeschool reunion this evening. I’ve seen everyone recently except for like two of them.

I’m not sure what’ll the chemistry will be tonight. There’ll be the inevitable catching up period and the reminiscing of old times.

Gradeschool wasn’t as great as highschool but I still had fun. I remembered going to school at 9am(classes start at 1pm) just to play tag or “touching ball” with my classmates. No thesis to worry or big tests to study. Gradeschool was all about play time and doing homework. Oh and the local bands back then was awesome too. What a great era.

Thank God

I don’t thank God enough. I should count my blessings more.

I mean I only thank him on those times where something really good happens. I think it’s the in-between moments, the moments where nothing much happens, that I should be more thankful about. His blessings flow non-stop. I just don’t happen to see them.

Hey God, thanks for today ha. :)

Try Starting Small

From about.com’s How to Become Wealthy

#2: Develop an Understanding of the Power of Small Amounts The biggest mistake most people make is that they think they have to start with an entire Napoleon-like army. They suffer from the “not enough” mentality; namely that if they aren’t making $1,000 or $5,000 investments at a time, they will never become rich. What these people don’t realize is that entire armies are built one soldier at a time; so too is their financial arsenal.
A friend of mine once knew a woman who worked as a dishwasher and made her purses out of used liquid detergent bottles. This woman invested and saved everything she had despite it never being more than a few dollars at a time. Now, her portfolio is worth millions upon millions of dollars, all of which was built upon small investments. I am not suggesting you become this frugal, but the lesson is still a valuable one. Do not despise the day of small beginnings!

I especially liked the part:

What these people don’t realize is that entire armies are built one soldier at a time; so too is their financial arsenal.

I’m another “One time big time” type of guy. I should start small and then think big.

I Must Start A Business

I must start a business soon. Time is running and I have a lot of things to learn.

How to Make a Million Dollars is inspiring and got me into the mood for business.

A friend once quoted that:

“Money can’t buy you happiness, but the lack of it makes you miserable.”

I’m always remember that quote.

To sum everything I’ve learned today:

  1. Start a business. Now.
  2. Look for something that can improve people’s lives. Then sell it.
  3. Find something that you live doing or something that you’re good at. Make a business out of it.
  4. Keep on trying no matter what. Never give up. Die trying.

Ubuntu Live CD

Update (Aug 10 2005):
The Ubuntu Live CD still lacks the tools, connectivity(no dsl connectivity) and applications(no out of the box mp3 support) compared to Knoppix. I guess it’s best purpose is to test drive Ubuntu before going for a full install. If some of your hardware doesn’t work and you still want to use Ubuntu, try going to the Ubuntu Forums and find a remedy.

But if you want to:

  1. Showcase linux without installing it.
  2. Use linux to recover data or fix you pc.
  3. Connect to the internet without installing an OS.

Knoppix is your best bet for those. Don’t get me wrong. I didn’t say that Ubuntu is an inferior Linux distro. It’s just that it’s Live CD version is still immature. The full distro is another story though.

IMHO Ubuntu is the best desktop variant of Linux. The perfect, if not, alternative to Windows. If you’re sick of using Windows and want to try something new, I wholeheartedly suggest Ubuntu.

– End of update–

Whoa it’s raining again. I like the weather and all but I don’t like getting my pants wet(uhh..) when going out(ahh). Thank God I still don’t have a cold after getting rained on two days in a row.

Anyway I’ve downloaded the Ubuntu Linux Live CD. I’m going to test drive it on my computer and see if I can migrate entirely from Windows. I don’t play much games anyway aside from emulators.

I’m just worried if Ubuntu could recognize my other hard disk. Knoppix doesn’t seem to mount it properly.
